SALES, MARCO. - Theologian and exegete, born at Sommariva Bosco (Turin) on 2 Oct. 1877, died there on 7 June 1936. In 1892 he entered the Order of Preachers; he was ordained priest in 1900.
From 1909 to 1911 he taught theology at the Collegio Angelicum in Rome and from 1912 to 1925 at the Theological Faculty of Fribourg. Appointed Master of the Apostolic Palace (22 Oct. 1925), he continued his effective priestly and teaching ministry, especially through *La S. Bibbia commentata*, of which he published the New Testament (2 vols., Turin 1912–14) and much of the Old Testament (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, ibid. 1919; Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel, ibid. 1934; Kings, Chronicles, ibid. 1924; Ezra, Tobit, Judith, Esther, Job, ibid. 1933; Psalms, ibid. 1934).
Sales produced a revision of the translation of *The Martyrdom* (v.), based on the Vulgate, together with a commentary rich in information and guided by conservative principles. His work was continued by G. Girotti, who published *The Sapiential Books* (1938) and Isaiah (1944).
