OREB AND ZEB. - Totemic names ('ôrêbh "raven"; zê'êbh "wolf") of two Midianite chiefs, captured by the Israelites of Gideon's time (v.) west of the Jordan (Judg. 7:25; 8:3; cf. Ps. 83:12), killed along with many of their men at a place near the river (probably in the territory of Ephraim), afterward named in memory of the event, respectively "rock of O." (Judg. 7:25 and Isa. 10:26) and "winepress of Z." (Judg. 7:25). This second name perhaps refers to a rock level with the ground that recalled the winepress in shape: two hollows, one large and one smaller (the "little pit") communicating with each other.
