SALZANO, TOMMASO MICHELE. - Dominican writer and archbishop, b. at Napoli in Apr. 1807, d. at Nocera Inferiore on 12 Sept. 1890. He held important offices in the Order, in the State, and in the Church. Pius IX first elected him titular bishop of Tanes (13 Jan. 1854), then (22 Dec. 1873) promoted him to titular archbishop of Edessa. He took an active part in the Vatican Council. In 1882 Leo XIII wished to summon him to Rome as master of the Sacred Palaces.
He left numerous and valuable publications, especially on canon law and history, including: Lezioni di diritto canonico pubblico e privato (4 vols., Napoli 1845, which had 13 editions); Corso di storia ecclesiastica dalla creazione del mondo sino ai giorni nostri (4 vols., ibid. 1855); Il cattolicesimo nel sec. XIX (ibid. 1880); Saggio sul pauperismo nel sec. XIX (ibid. 1883).
