IDAIA. - Name of several figures of the Old Testament.

1. Descendant of the patriarch Simeon (I Chron. 4:37; Heb. Jedhājāh "who praises Yahweh", Vulg. Idaia).

2. Son of Haromaph (Vulg. Jedaiah), a contemporary of Nehemiah; he contributed to the rebuilding of Jerusalem (Neh. 3:10).

3. The Vulgate also renders the Heb. name Jedhājāh ("Yahweh knows") as I. or Jedaiah or Jedaiah, borne by many priests: one entrusted with the second turn of service in the Temple (I Chron. 9:10; 24:7); various from the time of Nehemiah and of the exile (Ezra 2:36; Neh. 7:39; 11:10; 12:6; 79:21); one at the time of the prophet Zechariah (Zech. 6:10, 14).
