And the singers sung loud, and Jezraia was their overseer:E Maasia, e Semeia, ed Eleazar, e Azzi e Johanan, e Melchia, ed Elam, ed Ezer. E i cantori fecero risonare le loro voci con Jezraia loro capo:& Maasia, and Semeia, and Eleazar, and Azzi, and Iohanan, and Melchia, and Aelam, and Ezer. And the singing men sang alowd, and Iezraia the ouerseer:et Maasia, et Semeia, et Eleazar, et Azzi, et Johanan, et Melchia, et Ælam, et Ezer. Et clare cecinerunt cantores, et Jezraia præpositus: 42And they sacrificed on that day great sacrifices, and they rejoiced: for God had made them joyful with great joy: their wives also and their children rejoiced, and the joy of Jerusalem was heard afar off.E immolarono in quel dì grandi vittime, e furono in allegrezza: perchè Dio avea data loro consolazione grande: e le mogli ancora, e i figliuoli loro erano in festa, e si udì di lontano l'allegria di Gerusalemme.and they immolated in that day great victimes, and reioyced: for God had made them ioyful with great ioy: yea their wiues also and childeren reioyced, and the ioy of Ierusalem was heard far of.et immolaverunt in die illa victimas magnas, et lætati sunt: Deus enim lætificaverat eos lætitia magna: sed et uxores eorum et liberi gavisi sunt, et audita est lætitia Jerusalem procul. 43They appointed also in that day men over the storehouses of the treasure, for the libations, and for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, that the rulers of the city might bring them in by them in honour of thanksgiving, for the priests and Levites: for Juda was joyful in the priests and Levites that assisted. They numbered also in that day, men ouer the storehouses of the treasure, for the libamentes, and for the first fruites, and for the tythes. that the princes of the citie might bring in by them in the honour of thankesgiuing, Priestes and Leuites: because Iuda was made ioyful, in the Priestes & Leuites standing by.Recensuerunt quoque in die illa viros super gazophylacia thesauri ad libamina, et ad primitias, et ad decimas, ut introferrent per eos principes civitatis in decore gratiarum actionis, sacerdotes et Levitas: quia lætificatus est Juda in sacerdotibus et Levitis adstantibus.
44And they kept the watch of their God, and the observance of expiation, and the singing men, and the porters, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.E aveano adempiuto il culto del loro Dio, e le cerimonie della espiazione; e i cantori, e i portinai aveano osservato il rito prescritto da David, e da Salomone suo figliuolo:And they kept the watch of their God, and the obseruance of expiation, and the singing men, and the porters, according to the precept of Dauid, and of Salomon his sonne,Et custodierunt observationem Dei sui, et observationem expiationis, et cantores, et janitores juxta præceptum David, et Salomonis filii ejus, 45For in the days of David and Asaph from the beginning there were chief singers appointed, to praise with canticles, and give thanks to God.Perocché da principio a tempo di David, e di Asaph erano stabiliti i capi dei cantori, i quali cantavano inni, e laude a Dio.because in the daies of Dauid, and Asaph from the beginning there were princes appoynted of the singing men in song praysing, and confessing to God.quia in diebus David et Asaph ab exordio erant principes constituti cantorum in carmine laudantium et confitentium Deo. 46And all Israel, in the days of Zorobabel, and in the days of Nehemias gave portions to the singing men, and to the porters, day by day, and they sanctified the Levites, and the Levites sanctified the sons of Aaron.E a tempo di Zorobabele, e di Nehemia tutto Israele dava giorno per giorno le loro porzioni ai cantori, e ai portinaj: e presentava l'oblazione santa ai Leviti, e i Leviti presentavano l'oblazione santa ai figliuoli d'Aarone. And al Israel, in the daies of Zorobabel, and in the daies of Nehemias gaue portions to the singing men, and to the porters day by day, and they sanctified the Leuites, and the Leuites sanctified the children of Aaron.Et omnis Israël in diebus Zorobabel et in diebus Nehemiæ, dabant partes cantoribus et janitoribus per dies singulos, et sanctificabant Levitas, et Levitæ sanctificabant filios Aaron.
12:1
Priests. But not all, as some are omitted. See ver. 7, 22, etc.
Josue, or Jesus, the high priest.
Lyranus
Esdras, the famous scribe, who is supposed to have returned to Babylon, and to have been living under Nehemias, who came to Jerusalem 81 years after Zorobabel. If, therefore, Esdras was only 20 years old at the former period, he must have lived above 100 years, (Calmet) which is not improbable. (Lyranus; Tirinus, etc.)
Worthington
He returned again with many of his countrymen, by the king's leave. (Worthington)

Jeddoa. The Jaddus, who went to meet Alexander, in his pontifical attire, and was graciously received by him; as the monarch revered in his person the God of the Hebrews, who had formerly appeared to him in this manner, to encourage him to undertake the conquests of Asia. (Josephus, [Antiquities?] 11:8.)
Tirinus
Some think that the names of Jonathan and Jeddoa, and the ver. 22, 23, and 24, have been inserted since the time of Nehemias; as he must have lived 140 years, to see the conquests of Alexander. (Tirinus; Petau; N. Alex. T. 2 Dis. 7.)
Calmet
He could not be less than 20, when he returned in [the year of the world] 3550. Jaddus met Alexander in 3672; consequently, at that time, Nehemias was 142 years old. But if he died at the commencement of the reign of Darius Codomannus 3668, he would still be 138. (Calmet)
Haydock
Yet this longevity is by no means incredible, ver. 1., and 2 Esdras 13:28. (Haydock)
Usher (the year of the world 3602) maintains that Johanan was pontiff under Memnon.

Were purified first, that they might purify the rest. (Haydock)
Priests were obliged to abstain from wine, and from their wives, while they were on duty. See 2 Paralipomenon 29:34., and 35:2., etc. Levites were to wash their garments, Leviticus 8:21. All lepers, etc., required a certain purification, ibid. 5:2. 6.[Leviticus 8:2, 6.?] and Numbers 19:16. Care was taken that no dead body was found on the walls. These were probably sprinkled with water, etc., like the tabernacle, Leviticus 8:11.

Thanksgiving. St. Jerome, Septuagint, and Syriac have read in a different manner from the present Hebrew, (Calmet which has, "for the tithes to gather into them, out of the fields of the cities, the portions of (or by) the law assigned to the priests, etc. Tora, "law," has been read, toda, "thanksgiving," by St. Jerome; and sarim, "princes," has been substituted for sadim, "fields." ESDRAS. — Cajetan thinks this Esdras to be different from the Esdras of whom in book I, whom he himself wrote. He proves it, because this one is simply called Esdras, whereas that one, in book I, is called Priest and scribe. But Sanchez and others hold that it is one and the same. For this one also in verse 35 is called "Esdras the scribe," and is said to have presided over one choir of singers. Wherefore Esdras in this year 20 of Artaxerxes was already surviving at 147 years of age, as I said above. The Scholastic History adds in Judith chapter X: The walls having been dedicated, Esdras died and was buried in Jerusalem.

10. AND JOSUE BEGAT JOACIM, AND JOACIM BEGAT ELIASIB, AND ELIASIB BEGAT JOIADA. 11. AND JOIADA BEGAT JONATHAN, AND JONATHAN BEGAT JEDDOA. — Jeddoa is Jaddo, who, clothed in pontifical vestments, met Alexander the Great, and, because the Jews had favored Darius Codomannus, king of the Persians, to whom they were subject, rather than him as he invaded them, he placated him when he was offended toward the Jews. Wherefore Alexander venerated him as a suppliant, as Alexander is testified by Josephus, lib. XI Antiq. cap. VIII. You will say: Nehemias could not have seen Jaddo the high priest; for thus he would have had to live two hundred years: for so many years flowed from Cyrus to Alexander, and for so many years the Persian monarchy stood, which Alexander, having conquered Darius, transferred to the Greeks. For Nehemias lived and did these things under Artaxerxes Longimanus, who preceded Alexander by more than a hundred years: wherefore he himself could not have seen Jaddo as high priest under Alexander. Convicted by this argument, Scaliger, in De Emendatione Temporum, contends that Artaxerxes, who sent Nehemias into Judea, was not Longimanus but Mnemon, who reigned in Persia a little before Alexander. But I answer: All these things conjectured in the argument are true; and therefore this verse 11, equally as verse 22, was not written by Nehemias, but after his death was inserted into this book at this place by the Synagogue of the Jews, which was then governed by the Holy Spirit, or by some Hagiographic writer, to show the continuous succession of the High Priests throughout the entire time of the Persian kingdom up to Alexander, from whose deeds the books of the Maccabees begin, so that they might continue the continuous history of Israel, that is, of the commonwealth and Church of God through the Maccabees, High Priests and Princes, up to Christ. For the first Joshua, or Jesus, who is named here, was high priest under Cyrus: but the last Jeddoa, or Jaddo, was High Priest under Darius Codomannus and Alexander: but the intermediate ones were High Priests successively under Darius, Xerxes, Artaxerxes and other kings of the Persians likewise intermediate, as I showed in the catalogue and series of these High Priests, which I prefixed to Ezra. That this is so is gathered from verses 23 and 26, where it is said that in the time of Nehemias there were High Priests Joacim and Eliasib, "until the days of Jonathan the son of Eliasib;" but Jonathan was the father of Jeddoa, or Jaddi: wherefore Nehemias did not see him as High Priest. In a similar manner, to the books of Moses and Joshua and others, Ezra added the final chapters, in which their death is described, as I said in the preface to Ezra. I answer secondly, that Nehemias saw Jaddo as a boy, but not as High Priest. This is clear from cap. XIII, verse 28, where it is said that one of the sons of Joiada the High Priest gave his daughter as wife to Sanballat the Horonite: and thus he made him his son-in-law, "whom," says Nehemias, "I drove away from me." For this son of Joiada was Jonathan the father of Jaddi, or certainly was the brother of Jonathan. Wherefore if then Jonathan, or his brother, had a daughter of marriageable age, certainly he could also have a son Jaddo. Just as therefore Ezra, God granting, was long-lived and lived 147 years; so also Nehemias was long-lived, a contemporary of Ezra, and equally long-lived were Jesus the son of Josedec, Daniel and similar ones of that age, and this for this purpose, that they might restore the Synagogue, which had in part fallen away in captivity, in faith, law and worship of the true God, namely, as he says: "Charity does not feel old age." Wherefore Jaddo the high priest, in the time of Alexander the Great, appears to have been very aged, namely about 94 years old, so that he was born under Artaxerxes, or Darius Nothos his son, and was seen by Nehemias as a boy, or as a young man; for from the last year of Artaxerxes to Alexander there flowed 94 years. And for this reason Jeddoa here is not called high priest, but is simply named only, and is said to have been begotten by Jonathan.
12:12
12. AND IN THE DAYS OF JOACIM THERE WERE PRIESTS AND PRINCES OF FAMILIES (of the priestly families then recent and flourishing above the rest): OF SARAIA, MARAIA: OF JEREMIAS, HANANIA: OF EZRA, MOSOLLAM, etc., — that is to say, in the family of Saraia, which in the time of Joshua, or Jesus the high priest, was among the priestly families celebrated and first, as was said in verse 1, already in the time of Joacim the son of Jesus the High Priest, the principal and chief was Maraia: but in the family of Jeremias the first and chief was Hanania; but in the family of Ezra the head and chief was Mosollam; and thus of the others who follow.
12:22
22. THE LEVITES IN THE DAYS OF ELIASHIB AND JOIADA AND JOHANAN, AND JEDDUA, WRITTEN PRINCES OF FAMILIES, AND PRIESTS (supply, were those whom his long verse 24; for up to this point he has enumerated the princes of the families of the Levites who were priestly: now in like manner he enumerates the princes of the families of the Levites) in the kingdom (the Hebrew, until the kingdom, as Pagninus and Vatablus translate) of Darius the Persian, — namely of Darius Codomannus the last king of the Persians, whom in the seventh year of his reign Alexander conquered, and thus transferred the monarchy from the Persians to the Greeks. This verse appears to have been inserted into Nehemiah by some later person, as I said at verse 11; for Nehemiah did not see Darius Codomannus, nor Jaddua as High Priest under him: for thus he would have had to live two hundred years. Unless you say that Darius here is taken not as Codomannus, but as Nothus, who was the illegitimate son of Artaxerxes Longimanus, and succeeded him in the kingdom. For Nehemiah could have seen this one, and so if Jaddua was born at the beginning of the reign of Darius Nothus, at the time of Alexander the Great he was about 94 years old.

23. In the Book of the words of the days, — that is, in the annals, or diaries and chronicles of the High Priests of the Jews. For it is clear that the Jews wrote these annals with exactness from the book of Chronicles and from Josephus, and that through a series of the years of the High Priests, as the kings had already ceased to exist. Whence it is likewise evident that these annals are different from the book of Chronicles, for they are cited by it.
12:27
27. AND IN THE DEDICATION OF THE WALL OF JERUSALEM. — From this it is clear that this solemn dedication was of the wall of Jerusalem; and therefore it was completed shortly after the 52 days in which the wall was finished, as Salianus, Sanchez and others think: although some believe that this dedication was not of the wall only, but of the whole city, after houses, forums, streets and squares had been rebuilt and completed in it over a period of two years, according to the testimony of Josephus, for which reason they say this dedication of the whole city was made in the 22nd year of Artaxerxes. Whence they themselves begin from this 22nd year in which the city was dedicated, the 70 weeks of Daniel until Christ. Furthermore, the rite of this dedication is described in verse 30 and the following verses. From this began the pious custom of dedicating new cities and houses, which therefore even now the more religious carefully observe. The Gentiles did the same, as I said above. Hence the Emperor Justinian, book IX of the Sacred Places, § Sanctae, in the Digest on the division of things: "Sacred things also," he says, "such as walls and gates of a city are in a certain way of divine law, and therefore belong to no one's property." That walls were sacred among the Romans, Servius teaches in many places in his commentary on that passage of Virgil, book V of the Aeneid: Meanwhile Aeneas designates the city with a plow. Where he shows certain rites and sacrifices which were employed in the designation and construction of walls.

30. THEY PURIFIED THE PEOPLE, AND THE GATES, AND THE WALL, — Namely by sprinkling them with lustral water: likewise by praying and sacrificing for their safety. Again with the same rites they purified the walls and the people from all uncleanness and irregularity which under that law they easily and in many ways contracted.
12:31
31. AND I CAUSED THE PRINCES OF JUDA TO ASCEND UPON THE WALL. — For the wall had a small width, and therefore could hold few. I ordered therefore that only the princes, not all, but some of them ascend it, as it was their duty to protect it against enemies. Moreover on either side next to the princes were two choirs of Priests and Levites proceeding with equal step with them, and singing the praises of God. One choir was led by Ezra, as is clear from verse 33; the other by Nehemiah with his followers, who were partly priests, partly laymen, especially from the number of the princes, as is clear from verses 37 and 39.
12:42
42. AND THEY SACRIFICED ON THAT DAY GREAT VICTIMS, — which God showed himself pleased with, when he converted the waters with which the victims had been sprinkled into fire, which consumed the victims: for which reason the Hebrews, in order to commemorate so great a miracle yearly, instituted the feast of the fire given by God, as is clear from II Maccabees I, 18.
12:43
43. AND THEY APPOINTED ON THAT DAY MEN OVER THE TREASURIES OF THE STOREHOUSE FOR THE LIBATIONS, AND FOR THE FIRSTFRUITS, AND FOR THE TITHES, THAT THEY SHOULD BRING IN BY THEM THE PRINCES OF THE CITY IN A SEEMLY MANNER OF THANKSGIVING (in a seemly manner of thanksgiving, according to their merits), PRIESTS AND LEVITES, (so that namely through the men appointed over the treasuries they should bring the Priests and Levites to the treasuries themselves, that they might receive from them the tithes, libations, and firstfruits due to them by law, so that namely from them they should give portions to the Priests and Levites, as the Hebrew, Septuagint, Sixtine, Vatablus and others have it; and that "in a seemly manner of thanksgiving," so that namely through these seemly offerings they should give thanks to the Priests and Levites, because in this dedication and procession they had excellently fulfilled their duty by singing harmoniously and sacrificing religiously; this is indeed what he adds:) BECAUSE JUDA WAS MADE JOYFUL IN THE PRIESTS, AND LEVITES STANDING BY: — because they had performed their office in the dedication of the walls so excellently, as I said.
12:46
46. THE LEVITES SANCTIFIED, (that is, the Levites, as the Hebrew and Septuagint have it, as if to say: They brought a holy thing, namely tithes owed by law to sacred persons, namely the Levites. And in these tithes) THE LEVITES SANCTIFIED THE SONS OF AARON, — that is, they brought to the priests their tithe, concerning which Num. cap. XVIII, 8. To sanctify therefore here is the same as to offer a holy thing, namely a tithe. For from a holy thing a person seems to be sanctified, to whom a holy thing owed to him by law is offered; thus Cajetan, Vatable and others. Thus an unbelieving man is said to be sanctified (by external denomination) by a believing woman, and conversely a woman unbelieving by a believing man, I Corinth. VII, 14. Again to sanctify, says Sanchez, is to show by some religious and holy action that something is holy. How we are said to sanctify the Sabbath, or the temple, or even God, not because they receive any holiness from us; but because, while we venerate and worship them, we provide to men arguments of their holiness. Now it is no light argument of some holiness, if we maintain someone in public order at public expense, especially if the reason for that service, when it is rendered, is given, such as here is given by the people liberally and gratefully. Thus therefore the people sanctified the Levites; for by giving them tithes they showed them to be greater, as it were ministers of God to be maintained by public tithes; conversely the Levites, by giving the tithe of their tithes to the priests, showed them to be greater and holier. Whence the Apostle, Hebr. VII, 4, from the fact that Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek, proves that he was greater than Abraham. For tithes are given by laymen to priests as ministers of God, so that they may serve God and sacrifice for them.
