ELIASIB

ELIASIB (Heb. 'Eljā'ībh). - High priest of the time of Ezra and Nehemiah, son of Joiakim and father of Joiada (Neh. 3:1, 20; 12:10). He took part (Neh. 3:1) in the work of reconstruction promoted by Nehemiah, but without enthusiasm; he had in fact contracted a mixed marriage with an Ammonite woman and maintained cordial relations with Tobiah, the sheikh of the country of Ammon, a constant opponent of Nehemiah's work. To this foreign prince E. had granted the use of a room in the Temple of Jerusalem (Neh. 13:47).

Five other Israelites of this name occur in 1 Chron. 3:24 (the Vulgate has here Elianib); 24:12; Ezra 10:24, 27, 36.
