ELISA (EBR. 'ELISA')

ELISHA (Hebrew 'Elisa'). — Firstborn of Javan (Gen. 10:4). The name recurs in Ezek. 27:7: the “islands of E.” engaged in the purple trade with Tyre.

Scholars, who agree in seeing in Javan Greece, diverge in identifying this “son” of his. Some, following the Targum of Ezekiel, see here indicated Magna Graecia, particularly Sicily; others think of a city on the African coast; others of Cyprus; others, finally, of Elia.
