JAPHETH (Heb. Jepheth, Jāpheth, Septuagint: Iapheth). - Son of Noah, younger than Shem (Gen. 10:21, according to the Hebrew) and older than Ham (Gen. 9:24), progenitor of the peoples to the west and north of Palestine (Gen. 10:2-5), among them the Cimmerians (Gomer), the Medes (Madai), the Greeks, or Ionians (v. IAVAN). But the Aryan-European stock in general is usually given as descended from J.
The salient episode to which his name is linked is that of the paternal blessing, conferred on him and on Shem on the occasion of the incident that gave the two brothers the opportunity to manifest their respect for their father Noah: "God shall enlarge (Hebr. japht) J. and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan shall be their (Shem's and J.'s) servant" (Gen. 9:27); in this is recognized the foretold demographic and civil expansion of the Aryan-Europeans, but at the same time their religious subordination to the Semites, from whom indeed they received Christianity.
Some comparatists of ethnology and literature admit a relation between the biblical J. and the Greek Japetus (Ἰαπετός), who through Prometheus and Deucalion (cf. Hesiod, Works and Days, 5, 50) has, like the former, a connection with a universal flood.
