JAVAN (Heb. Jāveān). - Hebrew transcription of the name of the "Ionians" (Ἰάφεθ) of Asia Minor (Gen. 10:2, 4; 1 Chron. 1:5 agg.; Isa. 66:19; Ezek. 27:13), like the Assyrian Jāveān, Jām(a)nu, the Sanskrit Javanā, the Persian Jaunā (cf. Aeschylus, Pers., 178, 563), the Coptic Wejenin. Later I., like the corresponding Oriental terms, was used in the generic sense of "Greece" (Zech. 9:13; Dan. 8:21 agg.) and "sons of the Jāveānim" are the Greeks (Joel 4:6). Giovanni Rinaldi
