IAVAN (Hebr. Jāveān). — Hebrew transcription of the name of the “Ionians” (Ἰάφεθ) of Asia Minor (Gen. 10:2, 4; I Par. 1:5 agg.; Is. 66:19; Ez. 27:13), as in the Assyrian Jāveān, Jām(a)nu, the Sanskrit Javanā, the Persian Jaunā (cf. Aeschylus, Pers., 178, 563), and the Coptic Wejenin.
