Also known as: Greek: Ἰεκτάν; Joktan, Yoktan

JECTAN (Hebrew Jōqṭān, Septuagint: Iektán). - Son of Eber of the line of Shem (Gen. 10:25), whose sons (Gen. 10:26-30) bear names recognizable in tribes or localities of Yemeni Arabia, e.g., Sheba, Hazarmaveth (Ḥadramūt), etc.

The parallel name Qaṭṭān of certain Arab traditions appears to be considered independent of the Mosaic account, and therefore to be connected, as are also the notices of Gen. 10 ("table of nations"), with the most archaic memories of the Semitic stock. Giovanni Rinaldi
