IAVELLI, CRISOSTOMO. - Dominican theologian, b. at Casale Monferrato ca. 1470, d. at Bologna after 1538. A religious of the Dominican province "utriusque Lombardiae," he devoted himself entirely to study and teaching.
A man of great intellect, he wrote much; against the "Commentator," in defense of the Thomistic interpretation of Aristotle, he composed: Quaestiones acutissimae super VIII libros Physices ad mentem s. Thomae, Aristotelis et Commentatoris plurimum decisae. Also important and significant for the era are, besides the Ethica christiana (Venice 1540), the Philosophiae politicee sive civilis christianae dispositio (ibid. 1540) and the Oeconomica vel familiaris christiana disciplina (ibid. 1540). All of I.'s works were collected in Totius rationalis, naturalis, divinae ac moralis compendium (3 vols. Lyon 1567-90; 2 vols. Venice 1577).
He had dealings with Pietro Pomponazzi. The latter, when for his work De immortalitate animae (1516) he was condemned by the Inquisitor, turned to I. and asked him for a confutation of the work. The Dominican responded briefly to the various points of the controversial thesis. Pomponazzi was satisfied with it. I. treated the question of immortality again in his Tractatus de animae humanae indeficientia in quadruplici via, scil. peripatetica, academica, naturali et christiana (Venice 1536).
