1Now after the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and numbered the porters and singing men, and Levites:Ma dopo che furono fabbricate le mura, e io ebbi messe a luogo le porte, e fatta la rivista de' portinaj, e de' cantori, e de' Leviti,AND after the wal was built, & I had put on the doores, and numbred the porters, and singing men and Leuites:Postquam autem ædificatus est murus, et posui valvas, et recensui janitores, et cantores, et Levitas, 2I commanded Hanani my brother, and Hananias ruler of the house of Jerusalem, (for he seemed as a sincere man, and one that feared God above the rest,)Ordinai ad Hanani mio fratello, e ad Hanania principe della casa del Signore (perocché egli come uomo verace, e timorato di Dio, mi pareva da più degli altri),I commanded Hanani my brother, and Hananias prince of the house of Ierusalem (for the semed as it were a true man, and one that feared God aboue the rest)præcepi Hanani fratri meo, et Hananiæ principi domus de Jerusalem (ipse enim quasi vir verax et timens Deum plus ceteris videbatur), 3And I said to them: Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened till the sun be hot. And while they were yet standing by the gates were shut, and barred: and I set watchmen of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one by their courses, and every man over against his house.E disse loro: Non si apriranno le porte di Gerusalemme sino che il sole sia alto. E in presenza di essi furon chiuse, e sbarrate le porte; e posi a guardia gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, che si davano il cambio, e ciascheduno dirimpetto alla propria casa.and I sayd to them: Let not the gates of Ierusalem be opened vntil the heate of the sunne. And when they yet stood by, the gates were shut, and barred: and I sette watchmen of the inhabitants of Ierusalem, euery one by their courses, and euery man against his house.et dixi eis: Non aperiantur portæ Jerusalem usque ad calorem solis. Cumque adhuc assisterent, clausæ portæ sunt, et oppilatæ: et posui custodes de habitatoribus Jerusalem, singulos per vices suas, et unumquemque contra domum suam. 4And the city was very wide and great, and the people few in the midst thereof, and the houses were not built.Or la città era vasta, e ampia fuormisura, e piccol popolo avea nel suo recinto, e non erano fabbricate le case. And the citie was exceding large and great, and the people few in the middes therof, & there were no houses built.Civitas autem erat lata nimis et grandis, et populus parvus in medio ejus, et non erant domus ædificatæ. 5But God had put in my heart, and I assembled the princes and magistrates, and common people, to number them: and I found a book of the number of them who came up at first and therein it was found written:Ma Dio m'ispirò di raunare i magnati, e i magistrati, e il popolo per farne la rivista: e trovai un libro contenente il novero di quelli, che erano tornati i primi, e in esso si trovò scritto:But God gaue me in my hart, and I assembled the princes and magistrates, and common people, that I might number them: and I found a booke of the number of them, that came vp first, and there was found written in it:Deus autem dedit in corde meo, et congregavi optimates, et magistratus, et vulgus, ut recenserem eos: et inveni librum census eorum qui ascenderant primum, et inventum est scriptum in eo.

7:2
Vatable
House: "the citadel;" (Tigurin) "palace." (Vatable)
Menochius
The Septuagint retain the original, Beira, (Haydock) which signifies a palace, (Pagnin) concerning which Nehemias had spoken, 2 Esdras 2:8. (Menochius)
Calmet
But as it was not yet built, the house, being placed alone, more properly signifies the temple. We read of Zacharias and Jehiel, who occupied the same post (Calmet) as Hananias, 2 Paralipomenon 35:8. (Haydock) He was next to Eliasib, the high priest. (Calmet)
7:3
Haydock
Sun. Literally, "the heat of the sun," or perfect daylight. (Haydock)
Haydock
They. Syriac and Arabic, "while it was still day," (Calmet) or the sun shone. Before dusk the gates were shut, to prevent any improper person from entering. (Haydock)
Calmet
House, on the walls. (Calmet)
Worthington
These things protect a city; as grace a guard over the senses, and watchfulness do the soul. (Worthington)
7:4
Calmet
Not built, sufficient for so great a multitude. (Calmet)
Haydock
They lodged under tents, or in huts. (Haydock)
7:5
Tirinus
Heart, inspired me to provide inhabitants for the city, as was afterwards done by lot, 2 Esdras 11. (Tirinus)
Calmet
Written. Hence it seems evident that Nehemias here only transcribes this ancient record, of those who came under Zorobabel, and consequently this chapter ought to agree with 1 Esdras ii., as well as with 3 Esdras 5:9., (Haydock) which is now strangely corrupted; so that it can throw no light upon the matter. (Calmet)
Tirinus
Some think that various catalogues were taken, at Babylon, at the first coming to Jerusalem, (Menochius) and at the dedication of the temple; (Tirinus) and that Nehemias refer to a different one from that of Esdras. (Sa) (Lucas) (Tirinus)
Calmet
Others suppose that changes were introduced, as the families were increased or diminished, in the time of Nehemias; (Tirinus) who, therefore, judged it necessary to write a fresh catalogue, but only adjusted the old one to the present circumstances, including probably the names of those who had returned with Esdras, or with himself. (Calmet)
Haydock
This seems contrary to the text, a book of, etc., and it would perhaps be as well to allow that the variations arise from transcribers, as all allow that many of the names and numbers are corrupted. (Haydock)
Watson
The similarity of Hebrew letters for different numbers might easily occasion this; as we cannot suppose but Esdras would be able to give the total of sixty particular sums. (Watson, let. 5.)
7:33
Calmet
Other Nebo. We find no first mentioned; but in the ancient Latin edition, Nebo occurred instead of Geba, ver. 30. See 1 Esdras 2:29. Septuagint and Arabic omit, "the other." This Nebo may be Nob, or Nobe, in the tribe of Benjamin. (Calmet)

The sons; or, "who were the sons (filiorum) of Oduia." (Haydock)

Hitherto. This is not in the original, or in the other versions. It is inserted in the margin of some Latin manuscripts, and entirely omitted in others of great authority. The gloss might have been placed after ver. 64. (Calmet)
Haydock
Yet some of the following verses seem also to be copied from 1 Esdras. (Haydock)

Challoner
Athersatha; that is, Nehemias, as appears from 2 Esdras 8:9. Either that he was so called at the court of the king of Persia, where he was cup-bearer, or that, as some think, this name signifies governor; and he was at that time governor of Judea. (Challoner)
Calmet
Roman Septuagint insinuates that the princes gave these things "to Nehemias." (Calmet)
Alexandrian Septuagint, "They gave for the work, unto Athersatha."

7:3
Three special defences of a citie, are the strength of walles, shutting and opening the gates in due time, & diligēt watchmen: so to the custodie of faithful soules three thinges are necessarie; the grace of God, due regard of the outward senses, and continual watch against out inuisible enemies.

7:2
2. I COMMANDED HANANI MY BROTHER (kinsman). (This is that Hanani, who brought the message of the desolation of Jerusalem to Nehemiah in Persia, cap. I, vers. 2.) AND HANANIAH THE RULER (that is the prefect) OF THE HOUSE, — namely of the royal palace, as the Hebrews have it on Mount Sion. These two, as being men more trustworthy than others, that is sincere and upright, and fearing God, Nehemiah placed as guards of the city of Jerusalem.
7:3
3. And while they still stood by, — that is to say, Not except with these two guards, namely Hanani and Hananiah present and standing by, were the gates closed in the evening, lest any fraud should be made from the snares of enemies. Again in the morning they were not opened "before the heat of the sun," that is, before clear day, when all are awake.
7:4
4. AND THE PEOPLE SMALL, — for few had returned from Babylon, and of these few some, seeing the desolation of the city and the threats of enemies, had withdrawn themselves to other cities and villages of Judea, others had returned to Babylon or Persia, among whom was the Duke Zerubbabel.
7:5
5. And God gave into my heart, — that is to say, God suggested to me the counsel and manner of supplying the scarcity of inhabitants of Jerusalem, namely by reviewing the catalogue of those who had originally returned from Babylon with Ezra, and according to it, inviting and calling them to dwell in Jerusalem, which in fact we shall hear was done by lot in cap. XI. Whence immediately he reviews the catalogue containing the census of the people who had returned.
7:6
6. THESE (ARE) THE CHILDREN OF THE PROVINCE, WHO WENT UP FROM THE CAPTIVITY OF THE TRANSMIGRATION, — that is who returned from the transmigration of Babylon, namely from Babylon to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel under Cyrus. This is the catalogue, or census of the people, which Ezra reviewed, cap. II, but in other words and in numbers often quite different, especially in the middle; for the beginning and end are the same in both places. The reason is that the census of this people, or catalogue, was taken and described several times; namely first in Babylon, when the Jews departed thence: secondly in Jerusalem, when they first arrived there; thirdly when the temple was rebuilt, it was dedicated with solemn concourse of the people. But these censuses varied among themselves; because as some died others were born, as some departed others arrived. Wherefore from one census Ezra described his catalogue, from another Nehemiah; and therefore they vary. See Francis Lucas in Notes 79.
7:65
65. And Athersatha said, — that is Nehemiah, as is clear cap. VIII, vers. 9. Thus far the catalogue. This annotation does not exist in the Hebrew, Greek and some Latin texts. Whence the Greek Epanorthotes, and others think it should be omitted, indeed they reject it, as Lyra and the Carthusian. Certainly a different character sufficiently shows these inserted words, and that they are not of the text, nor of the faith, says Sanchez. Yet the Bibles corrected at Rome have this annotation. It seems therefore to have been added by the Interpreter, as many similar things have been added in the book of Esther, or by some paraphrast, or commentator: thus Francis Lucas, Notes 79.
7:70
70. AND SOME OF THE PRINCES, — This is the catalogue of the gifts offered for the building, and is the same as that which Ezra reviewed, cap. II, but as I said, different in numbers; perhaps because Ezra included the gifts of more people, namely of all those also from the kingdom of Cyrus, whether Jews or Persians, at the exhortation of Cyrus, who contributed something from their wealth to the building or later sent it to Jerusalem: but Nehemiah only the gifts of the Jews returning from captivity, and those chief ones only, and therefore fewer than Ezra reviews, says Francis Lucas in the place cited.
Machine translation from the Latin, not reviewed.

Other biblical figures bear the same name: one of the 37 mighty men of David (ibid. 23, 29); one of those who returned from the exile (Eid. 2, 2; Neh. 7, 7; 10, 27); one of Solomon's 12 overseers, placed over Asher and Baloth (I Reg. 4, 16; in Hebrew, however, Ba'ānāh, as in Neh. 3, 4).
… Probably born in exile (Josedech, his father, was deported to Babylon in 587: 1 Chron. 6:15 [Hebr. 5:41]), he is in second place after Zerubbabel among the 12 (Neh. 7:7) leaders of the first caravan (year 537) of repatriates (Ezra 1:2). After some months, he raised up the altar again, re-established the daily sacrifice and the various solemnities (Ezra 3:2-6).
Nehemias (Hebr. Nēḥemyāh, Septuagint Nemía[s], Vulg. Nehemias)
… But of this second mission, as of the end of Nehemiah, nothing is known, since the biblical account is suddenly cut off with the invocation of the figure: "Remember me, O my God, for good" (Neh. 13:21). Two other influential Jews of the same period were named Nehemiah (ibid. 3:16; 7:7).

3. The Vulgate also renders the Heb. name Jedhājāh ("Yahweh knows") as I. or Jedaiah or Jedaiah, borne by many priests: one entrusted with the second turn of service in the Temple (I Chron. 9:10; 24:7); various from the time of Nehemiah and of the exile (Ezra 2:36; Neh. 7:39; 11:10; 12:6; 79:21); one at the time of the prophet Zechariah (Zech. 6:10, 14).

Levites (Heb. Lēwī, pl. Lēwījīm; Gr. Lēwījī, pl. -ai)
… Ezekiel's context a tone of reproach toward the Levites is perceptible, in comparison with the priests of the line of Zadok: alongside this observation must be set that of the small number of Levites who returned to their homeland (ca. 350; Esd. 2:41-42; Neh. 7:45, 56; cf. Esd. 8:15-19) in comparison with the priests (ca. 4,300; Esd. 2:36-39), more ardent in Yahwistic and nationalistic spirit (but they too, like the Levites, were in good number …

It finds an analogy in biblical toponymy (Tell Melah "hill of salt," and Tell Harlā' "hill of the plow": Ezra 2:59; Neh. 7:61). However, some Assyriologists (H. Winckler, Frd.
