BAANA (Hebrew: Baʿānāh). - Commander of a band of soldiers of Ish-bosheth, son of Saul. Having seen the cause of Ish-bosheth lost after the death of Abner (v.), he conspired together with his companion Rechab against the life of the prince. After Ish-bosheth was killed, they presented themselves to his rival David, who, however, punished the murder with death (II Sam. 4, 2-9).

Other biblical figures bear the same name: one of the 37 mighty men of David (ibid. 23, 29); one of those who returned from the exile (Eid. 2, 2; Neh. 7, 7; 10, 27); one of Solomon's 12 overseers, placed over Asher and Baloth (I Reg. 4, 16; in Hebrew, however, Ba'ānāh, as in Neh. 3, 4).
