BAANA (Hebr. Ba'ānāh). — Commander of a troop of soldiers of Isboseth, son of Saul. Having seen Isboseth’s cause ABENESRA (v.), he conspired with his companion Recab against the prince’s life. Having killed Isboseth, they presented themselves before his rival David, who, however, punished the murder with death (II Sam. 4:2–9).
Other biblical figures bear the same name: one of David’s 37 mighty men (ibid. 23:29); one of those who returned from exile (Eid. 2:2; Neh. 7:7; 10:27); one of Solomon’s 12 prefects, placed over Aser and Balot (I Reg. 4:16; in Hebrew, however, Ba'ānāh, as in Neh. 3:4).
