THE SANCTUARY OF MONTE SANTO. — A Marian sanctuary, whose foundation dates back to an apparition in 1539. Entrusted from 1566 to the Franciscans of Bosnia, it was suppressed in 1786 by Joseph II, who also removed the miraculous image of the Madonna. In 1793, however, it was reopened, and in 1901 the Franciscans returned, officiating there to this day, entrusted since 1924 to the province of Trento, which rebuilt it entirely after the destruction suffered in the war of 1915–18. The image of the Madonna was solemnly crowned in 1717, and in 1907 the sanctuary was raised to the status of a basilica.
THE SANCTUARY OF S. MARIA DI BARBANA. — A Marian sanctuary located on an islet in the Grado lagoon. Its origins date back to the time of the Patriarch of Aquileia Helias (571–88), who also built a Benedictine monastery there. Leo X suppressed the abbey in 1513, aggregating it to that of S. Maria in Sesto in Silvis near Portogruaro. Passed to the Conventuals from 1577 until the Venetian suppression of 1769, in 1901 it was entrusted to the Friars Minor, who recently rebuilt the church, consecrated in 1936, and added extensive facilities for pilgrims, particularly frequent in the summer period. The image of the Madonna was solemnly crowned on 15 August 1863.
