IMAGINATION. – It is usually fantasy (v.). In medieval Aristotelianism, Avicenna distinguished between them, attributing to i. the function of elaborating the images that fantasy receives and preserves. But St. Thomas, following Averroes, reduced them to a single faculty (cf. Sum. Theol., 1ᵃ, q. 78, a. 4).
