IMAGINATION. — It is usually taken as a synonym for fantasy (v.). In medieval Aristotelianism, Avicenna distinguished it, attributing to it the function of elaborating the images that fantasy receives and preserves. But St. Thomas, following Averroes, reduced them to a single faculty (cf. *Sum. Theol.*, 1ª, q. 78, a. 4).
