JOSABETH (JOSABA). - Daughter of Jehoram (v.), king of Judah, and sister of Ahaziah; she was the consort of the high priest Jehoiada (v.; cf. 2 Chronicles 22:11). She is the only case in the Bible of a royal princess given in marriage to a high priest. She had the merit of saving her little grandson Joash (v.), son of Ahaziah, from the fury of Athaliah, who, after the death of that king, exterminated all the descendants of the royal line (842-836 B.C.). The child, raised in secret in the Temple through her care and that of her husband Jehoiada, when he had reached the age of seven was acclaimed king by the nation (2 Kings 11:1-4; 2 Chronicles 22:10-12). It does not appear that I.'s mother was the aforementioned Queen Athaliah, as Flavius Josephus supposes (Antiq. Iud., IX, 7, 1): she was probably a daughter of King Jehoram by another wife.
