JANAUSCHEK, LEOPOLIS. — Cistercian, born in Brünn (Moravia) on 13 October 1827, died at Baden near Heiligenkreuz on 23 July 1898. He entered the monastery of Zwettl (1846). He taught ecclesiastical history at the monastery of Heiligenkreuz and at the University of Vienna. Meanwhile, he devoted himself to a great history of his Order.
In 1877 the first volume appeared: Origines Cistercienses, containing the complete, critically compiled list of all the monasteries and the complete bibliography for each one. A brief compendium of the history of the Order, which remained famous, had preceded this work (Vienna 1877). J. was unable, however, to publish the subsequent volumes, although he left a great deal of unpublished material. No less noteworthy is the Bibliographia Bernardina (Vienna 1891). On the occasion of the eighth centenary of the death of St Bernard, he promoted the publication of Xenia Bernardina, in 4 vols. (Vienna 1891). Vincenzo Hermans
