JANN, ADELHELM DA STANS. - Swiss Capuchin historian, b. in the village of Alpnach on 21 Feb. 1876, d. at Lucerne on 30 Dec. 1945. He entered the novitiate at Lucerne on 7 Sept. 1895, graduated at Fribourg (1909) in philosophy and history, which he taught for 35 years at the College of Stans; he was an esteemed preacher and learned lecturer.
In the work Die katholischen Missionen in Indien, China und Japan (Paderborn 1915), he studied their organization under Portuguese patronage from the 15th to the 18th century. Among his numerous works of historical research, the Monumenta Anastasiana (5 vols., Lucerne 1939–48) stand out, in which he systematically collected all the extensive and valuable docu-
mentation concerning the Servant of God Anastasius Hartmann (v.) and the missions in India. He also illustrated the biography of his fellow friar, the martyr Blessed Apollinare Morel da Posat.
