JANN, ADELHELM DA STANS. - Swiss Capuchin historian, born in the village of Alpnach on 21 February 1876, died in Lucerne on 30 December 1945. He entered the novitiate in Lucerne on 7 September 1895, earned a doctorate in Fribourg (1909) in philosophical and historical disciplines, which he taught for 35 years at the College of Stans; he was also a respected preacher and confessional theologian.
In his work *Die katholischen Missionen in Indien, China und Japan* (Paderborn 1915), he studied their organization under Portuguese patronage from the 15th to the 18th century. Among his numerous historical research writings, the *Monumenta Anastasiana* (5 vols., Lucerne 1939–48) stand out; in this work he systematically collected all the vast and valuable documentation concerning the Servant of God Anastasius Hartmann (v.) and the missions in India. He also illustrated the biography of his martyred confrere, Blessed Apollinare Morel da Posat.
