ALBERTO DA BOLZANO KNOLL. — Capuchin theologian and preacher of the Tyrolean province, born at Brunico on 12 July 1796, died at Bolzano on 30 March 1863. Ordained priest, he took the religious habit on 21 November 1818; he served as definitor general (1847–53).
The fruit of 24 years of school teaching at Merano, from 1823, are the *Institutiones theologiae dogmaticae generalis seu fundamentalis* (Innsbruck 1852; 2nd ed. Turin 1861, reprinted several times; revised ed. by E. Morandi, 1882, 2nd ed. 1904); revised ed. by P. Norberto da Tux, 2 vols., Brixen 1890; following these came the extensive *Institutiones theologiae theoreticae seu dogmatico-polemicae* (6 vols., Turin 1853–59, 7th ed. 1883), which the author himself abridged into a *Compendium* (2 vols., 1883; Innsbruck 1865; Turin 1865, reprinted several times and revised in 1892 by E. Morandi); his confrere P. Grefredo da Graun prepared a reworking in 3 vols. (Innsbruck 1893–96). From these works the Belgian Capuchin Gonzalvo da Reeth compiled a *Manuale theologiae dogmaticae* (2 vols., Tournai 1890). His *Expositio regulae Fratrum Minorum* (Innsbruck 1850, Naples 1853, Florence 1864) is considered official for the Friars Minor Capuchins and was revised under the care of the general superiors (Milan 1889, Rome 1932; Italian trans., Bologna 1942).
He was zealous in priestly ministry, especially in preaching, of which there survive posthumously the *Predigten für die Sonntage* (Brixen 1867; 2nd ed. 1871; Italian trans., 2 vols., Turin 1870–71; 2nd ed. 1871–75–76) and the *Predigten für die Festtage* (Brixen 1870, 2nd ed. 1871–75–76; Italian trans., 2 vols., Turin 1873).
