JUNG-STILLING, JOHANN HEINRICH. - Pietist, b. at Grund (Hilchenbach) on Sept. 12, 1740, d. at Karlsruhe on Apr. 2, 1817. In 1787 he was professor of economic and administrative sciences at the University of Marburg. Goethe made him famous by publishing, without his knowledge, in 1777 the first part of Heinrich Stillings Jugend; in this and in his many other works (Sämtliche Werke, 12 vols., Stuttgart 1841-42) J.-S. is among the most evocative followers of Pietism, into which, moreover, flows back the heritage of the "abandonment" of seventeenth-century Quietism.
His life and his writings are pervaded by a profound religiosity that sees in every least thing the direct and constant intervention of Providence, by a "nostalgia for heaven" that colors every act of life, by a notable taste for the esoteric: "whoever is attacked with mysteries must defend himself with mysteries." J.-S. was a convinced anti-Enlightenment thinker and anti-Jacobin: he saw in the principles of '89 the beginning of a de-Christianizing era.
