KUYPER, ABRAHAM. - Dutch theologian and politician, b. at Maassluis on 29 Oct. 1837 and d. at The Hague on 8 Nov. 1920. After completing his studies at Leiden, he was a pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church at Breda. Having embraced politics in 1874, he led the party
anti-revolutionary, which aimed at the restoration of Calvinist principles in the conduct of the State.
Twice a deputy (in 1874 and in 1894) to the Second Chamber, in 1901 he was president of the Council and minister of the Interior, remaining in office until 1905. In 1913 he was called to be part of the First Chamber. A proponent of modern Dutch neo-Calvinism, he developed its doctrines in various writings and founded a Calvinist university in Amsterdam, where he himself taught. He wrote, among other things: Het Calvinisme oorsprong en Waarborg onder constitutionele Vrijheden (Amsterdam 1874); Tractaat van der Reformatie der Kirken (ibid. 1884); Encyclopaedia theologiae (3 vols., ibid. 1894); Het Calvinisme (ibid. 1898-99); Ons Program (ibid. 1907).
