LADISLAS I, King of Poland, called Łokietek. - So nicknamed because of his short stature. B. in 1260, d. on 2 March 1333, he is one of the most eminent figures in Polish history, for the effort he made to unify under his scepter the scattered Polish lands, toward the north against the Teutonic Knights, toward the south (Lesser Poland) against Bohemia.

After inheriting Sieradz and Łęczyca and having tried in vain to seize Sandomierz and Lesser Poland, disputed from him by Wenceslaus II of Bohemia, he succeeded in subjecting Greater Poland and Pomerania with Danzig. Dethroned by Wenceslaus II (1300), who had himself crowned king of Poland, Hungarian aid and that of Boniface VIII allowed him to resume the struggle against Bohemia and, having defeated Wenceslaus, he was crowned in Kraków king of Poland on 20 Jan. 1320; he did not succeed in prevailing against the Teutonic Knights, whom he continued to fight until his death for the dominion of Pomerania, that is, for access to the sea.
