LISIA, CLAUDIUS. — Roman military tribune who commanded the garrison of the Antonia Tower in Jerusalem. He saved Paul from being lynched: mistaking him for an Egyptian rebel, he had him chained. When he learned that Paul was a Roman citizen, he had him unbound and sent him to the Sanhedrin; but, informed by Paul’s nephew of a conspiracy, he dispatched him under heavy guard to Caesarea (Act. 21, 30-40; 22, 24-30; 23, 12-33; cf. 21, 7 and 22) Felix (v.).
