LISIAS, CLAUDIO. — A Roman military tribune who commanded the garrison of the Antonia Tower in Jerusalem. He saved Paul from being lynched by having him chained, mistakenly thinking he was an Egyptian rebel. Upon learning that Paul was a Roman citizen, he released him and sent him to the Sanhedrin. However, informed by Paul’s nephew of a plot against him, he sent Paul under strong escort to Caesarea (Acts 21:30–40; 22:24–30; 23:12–33; cf. 21:7 and 22) to the procurator Felix (q.v.).
