LOPES, FERNÃO. - Portuguese chronicler. The biographical data are scanty and uncertain: he perhaps lived from 1380 to 1460. King John I called him to the position of trust as keeper of the archives of the Torre do Tombo in Lisbon: he remained there 36 years, attending to the drafting of the chronicles requested of him, on the kings of the national dynasties of Burgundy and of Aviz.
He completed or sketched the ten biographies on the nine kings of the first and on the first of the second: of these there have survived in the original the last three, on Peter I (it is a sketch), on Ferdinand and on "his" John I, sufficient to make of him the greatest of the Portuguese historians of his century (he is called the "father of Portuguese history") and perhaps the most remarkable in Europe of that time. His history demonstrates a scrupulous anxiety for the truth and a continuous aspiration to a "philosophical" systematization, as he himself expresses it, between cause and effect in events. Of singular effectiveness is his portrayal of Nuno Álvarez, the saintly leader of the defense against the Spaniards (if it is his, as a part of criticism still maintains, also the Crónica do condestobre de Portugal Nuno Álvarez Pereira), and the description of the crowds.
