LUGOJ, DIocese of. – A Catholic diocese united in Romanian Banat. It was founded by Pius IX with the bull *Apostolicum ministerium* of 26 Nov. 1853 and assigned as a suffragan to the United Archbishop of Făgăraș-Alba Iulia. Its territory was taken from the bishoprics of Făgăraș and Oradea Mare. Its first bishop was Alexandru Dobra.
Within its jurisdiction (32,208 sq km) there are 213 churches and 235 parishes with 20 priests and 127,763 faithful out of a total population of 1,695,727.
