Maier, Adalbert

MAIER, ADALBERT. - Catholic exegete, b. at Villingen (Baden) on 26 Apr. 1811, d. at Freiburg im Breisgau on 29 July 1889. From 1840 he taught New Testament exegesis at Freiburg, distinguishing himself by his historical-critical and philological method, and he was four times pro-rector of the University.

His principal works all relate to the introduction, exegesis, and biblical theology of the New Testament: Exegetisch-dogmatische Entwicklung der neutestamentlichen Begriffe von Ζωή, Ἀνάστασις und Κρίσις (Freiburg im Breisgau 1840); Commentar über das Evangelium des Johannes (2 vols., ibid. 1843-45); Commentar über den Brief Pauli an die Römer (ibid. 1847); Historisch-kritische Untersuchungen über den Hebräerbrief (ibid. 1851; he attributes it to Barnabas); Einleitung in die Schriften des Neuen Testamentes (ibid. 1852); Die Glossolalie des apostolischen Zeitalters exegetisch-kritisch beleuchtet (ibid. 1855); Commentar über den ersten Brief Pauli an die Korinther (ibid. 1857); Commentar über den Brief an die Hebräer (ibid. 1861); Commentar über den zweiten Brief Pauli an die Korinther (ibid. 1865); Exegetisch-kritische Untersuchungen über die Christologie (ibid. 1871). He was moreover a tireless contributor to the Zeitschrift für Theologie, of which he was co-editor (1842-49), and he contributed many articles on biblical history and archaeology to the Kirchen-Lexikon.
