MARTIANAY, JEAN. - Benedictine exegete and patrologist, b. at St-Sever-Cap (Gascony) on 30 Dec. 1647, d. at St-Germain-des-Près (Paris) on 16 June 1717. Having entered the Toulouse monastery of the Congregation of St-Maur (1667), he devoted himself especially to the study of Greek and Hebrew and taught biblical sciences in various monasteries.
His principal work, announced by the Divi Hieronymi prodromus (Paris 1690), was the edition of the works of St Jerome: S. Eusebii Hieronymi Stridouensis presbyteri divina bibliotheca antehac inedita (5 vols., there 1693-1706), which soon became the object of disagreements and harsh criticism. In that same year, 1706, he also published in Paris La vie de st Jérôme prêtre, solitaire et docteur de l'Eglise. His annotations on the entire correspondence of St Jerome are also found separately in PL 22, 1225-72.
His other numerous writings (cf. Ch. de Lama, Bibliothèque des écrivains de la Congrégation de St-Maur, Monaco 1882, pp. 110-15, nn. 297-320) are for the most part polemical and apologetic, marked by a lively and biting style, as well as hermeneutical.
