MANFREDI, EUSTACHIO. - Mathematician and man of letters, b. in Bologna on 20 Sept. 1674, d. there on 15 Feb. 1739. He was a public lecturer in mathematics at the University of Bologna (1699), provost of the Collegio Montalto (1704), regulator of the waters (1711) and astronomer of the Institute of Sciences (1715), which had just arisen through the work of a group of scholars whom M., from his earliest youth, gathered in his house for scientific and literary purposes, under the name of the Accademia degli Inquieti. M. also cultivated poetry, and of his Rime (1st ed., Bologna 1713, reprinted several times), free of seventeenth-century affectations and almost all of a religious character, something still alive remains today. His works are very numerous: on astronomy, chronology, mathematics and hydraulics; some works for the theater, novellas. Many of his familiar letters have been repeatedly printed.
