MARCA, PIERRE de. - Bishop, b. at Gan (Basses-Pyrénées) on 24 January 1594. After a brilliant political career in his country, having been left a widower he became a priest and was appointed bishop of Conserans (Catalonia) by the King.

His famous book De concordia sacerdotii et Imperii (Paris 1641) having been placed on the Index (7 April 1642), because it was held to be too favorable to the Gallican liberties, it was only with a Libellus of retraction (Barcelona 1646) that he obtained the bulls of appointment (1648). He was then (1652) archbishop of Toulouse, where he fought Jansenism, and of Paris, of which he could not take possession because he died on 29 June 1662. He wrote various works of theology and history: among others a valuable Histoire du Béarn (Paris 1650; new ed. ibid. 1894).
