MARCA, PIERRE de. – Bishop, born in Gan (Basses-Pyrénées) on 24 January 1594. After a brilliant political career in his country, having become a widower he entered the priesthood and was appointed by the King bishop of Conserans (Catalonia).
Since his famous book De concordia sacerdotii et Imperii (Paris 1641) had been placed on the Index (7 April 1642), because it was considered too favorable to Gallican liberties, it was only with a Libellus of retraction (Barcelona 1646) that he obtained the bulls of appointment (1648). He later became (1652) archbishop of Toulouse, where he fought Jansenism, and of Paris, which he was unable to take possession of because he died on 29 June 1662. He wrote various works of theology and history, including a valuable Histoire du Béarn (Paris 1650; new ed. ibid. 1894).
