PIERRE DE MARCA. — Bishop, born in Gan (Basses-Pyrénées) on 24 January 1594. After a brilliant political career in his country, he became a priest following the death of his wife and was appointed by the King as bishop of Conserans (Catalonia).
Since his famous work *De concordia sacerdotii et Imperii* (Paris 1641) was placed on the Index (7 April 1642) for being deemed too favourable to Galilean liberties, he only obtained the appointment bulls (1648) after submitting a *Libellus* of retraction (Barcelona 1646). He was later (1652) archbishop of Toulouse, where he combated Jansenism, and of Paris, of which he could not take possession as he died on 29 June 1662. He wrote various works on theology and history, including a noteworthy *Histoire du Béarn* (Paris 1650; new ed. there 1894).
