MARGHERITA DI CITTÀ DI CASTELLO, blessed. - Dominican tertiary, called the blind woman of Metola after the village where she was born in 1287. In order to implore the grace of sight, her parents took her to nearby Città di Castello, to the tomb of a Franciscan (perhaps the blessed Giacomo), who had died in 1306 in the odour of sanctity, and abandoned her there. Taken in and fed in turn by poor local women, she lived devoted to penance and meditation, working various miracles, which were repeated in great number after her death (13 Apr. 1320).
By the will of the people she received an honourable burial in the church of S. Domenico. Three pearls were found in her heart which seemed to be carved with images of the Holy Family (plastic stigmatisation). Her cult was permitted by Paolo III on 28 Oct. 1609. In her prayer she anticipated the cult of s. Giuseppe.
