MARTINO da Barcellona. - Capuchin historian, born in Barcelona on 4 Oct. 1895, beheaded there by Communists in the latter half of Dec. 1936. He entered the novitiate at Arenys de Mar on 15 Oct. 1910; ordained priest on 5 May 1918, he furthered his historical studies at Louvain (1924–26).
Of particular note is his Estudio crítico de las fuentes históricas de s. Francisco y s. Clara (Barcelona 1921). He also cultivated and promoted French and Catalan historical research, especially through his direction, from 1926, of Estudis franciscans (Estudios franciscanos), bringing to light medieval Franciscan authors, including Fr. Eiximenis with his studies on the Doctrina compendiosa (Barcelona 1929) and on the Terç del cristià (2 vols., 1919–1930); as well as with the Notes descriptives dels nus. franciscans medievalis de la Biblio. nacional de Madrid (IV 1933). La cultura catalana en el reinado de Jaime II (IV 1936) earned him the «Francesc Vives» prize. He also produced the critical edition of the Historia de la primacia de la seu de Tarragona (Tarragona 1924). He contributed articles to various journals.
