MARTINO da BARCELLONA. – Capuchin historian, born in Barcellona on 4 October 1895, beheaded there by the Communists in the second half of December 1936. He entered the novitiate at Arenys de Mar on 15 October 1910; ordained a priest on 5 May 1918, he pursued advanced studies in the historical sciences at Louvain (1924–26).
Particularly noteworthy is his Estudio crítico de las fuentes históricas de s. Francisco y s. Clara (Barcellona 1921). He also cultivated and promoted Franciscan and Catalan historical research, above all through his direction, from 1926 onward, of the Estudis franciscans (Estudios franciscanos), bringing to light medieval Franciscan authors, including Fr. Eiximenis, through his studies on the Doctrina compendiosa (Barcellona 1929) and on the Terg del crestià (2 vols., there 1929–1930); as well as through the Notes descriptives dels mss. franciscans medievals de la Bibliot. nacional de Madrid (there 1933). La cultura catalana en el reinado de Jaime II (there 1936) earned him the «Francesc Vives» prize. He is also responsible for the critical edition of the Historia de la primacia de la seu de Tarragona (Tarragona 1924). He contributed articles to various journals.
