MARTINENGO, MARIA MADDALENA, of Barco, blessed. - Capuchin Poor Clare, b. at Brescia on 5 Oct. 1687, d. there on 27 July 1737. Beatified on 18 Apr. 1901. Feast day 27 July.

A nun on 8 Sept. 1705, from the humblest offices she was elected mistress of novices (1723–32), abbess (1732–34, 1736–1737), vicaress (1734–36). In 1714 she made the “great vow” to strive for what was of “greater perfection”; she practised very rigorous bodily penance and attained the highest degrees of contemplation. A precious document of her piety and mystical experience is the Autobiografia, written in 1725–26. From her manuscript works was drawn a Raccolta di avvertimenti spirituali (Venice 1779; 2nd ed. there 1781); extracts from the Esercizi spirituali, Dialoghi, Lettere, Documenti spirituali (Trent 1905); Lumi per i superiori (Treviglio 1926).
