MARTINENGO, DOMENICO. - Missionary of St. Vincent, b. at Savona on 17 Dec. 1816, d. there on 1 Oct. 1875. Having entered the Congregation of the Mission at Savona on 9 Aug. 1835, he took his vows on 15 Aug. 1837. He completed his studies at Sarzana and at the Collegio Alberoni in Piacenza. As a priest, he directed conferences and retreats for the clergy in the diocese of Casale Monferrato; he then taught literature at Sarzana and at Finale Marina.
Stricken by a serious illness, he devoted his final years to the publication of useful pamphlets (La parrocchia; La verità vera; Agli operai, ammonimenti e ricordi; Il Concilio Vaticano, etc.) for the dissemination of good reading among the people. For this purpose he also founded a Society for the dissemination of good books. Left unfinished, M.'s well-known work, Pio VII in Savona, memorie storiche (Turin 1888), was completed by his brother Francesco.
