MARCHESI, LUIGI. - Liturgist, Vincentian missionary, b. in Roma on 15 Nov. 1825, d. in Firenze on 16 June 1872. He entered the Congregation of the Mission in 1843 and took his vows there in 1845.
He was director of the Pontifical Liturgical Academy, consultor to the S. Congregation of Rites, and delegate of the S. See in Paris for the reform of the Gallican liturgy, on which he wrote the notable work La liturgia gallicana nei primi otto secoli della Chiesa (2 vols., Roma 1867). Also to be recalled among his principal writings is De legittimitate Breviarii et Missalis Ordinis Cistercensis (1 vol. in 4°, Roma 1868). His work on the office of the Immaculate Conception and on the cult of s. Giuseppe was noteworthy.
