MARCHESI, LUIGI. — Liturgist, missionary of St Vincent, b. in Rome on 15 Nov. 1825, d. in Florence on 16 June 1872. He entered the Congregation of the Mission in 1843 and made his vows in 1845.
He was director of the Pontifical Liturgical Academy, consultor of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, delegate of the Holy See in Paris for the reform of the Gallican liturgy, on which he wrote the noted work *La liturgia gallicana nei primi otto secoli della Chiesa* (2 vols., Rome 1867). Among his principal writings should also be recalled the *De legittimitate Breviarii et Missalis Ordinis Cisterciensis* (1 vol. in 4°, Rome 1868). Notable are his works on the office of the Immaculate Conception and on the cult of St Joseph.
