Marchesi, Luigi

MARCHESI, LUIGI. - Liturgist, missionary of St. Vincent, b. in Rome on 15 Nov. 1825, d. in Florence on 16 June 1872. He entered the Congregation of the Mission in 1843, and took his vows there in 1845.

He was director of the Pontifical Liturgical Academy, consultor of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, delegate of the Holy See in Paris for the reform of the Gallican liturgy, on which he wrote the well-known work La liturgia gallicana nei primi otto secoli della Chiesa (2 vols., Rome 1867). Among his principal writings mention should also be made of De legittimitate Breviarii et Missalis Ordinis Cistercensis (1 vol. in 4°, Rome 1868). His works for the office of the Immaculate Conception and for the cult of St. Joseph are noteworthy.
