MATTEO CIGALAS. — Greek writer, d. ca. 1642. Of Italian origin, b. on the island of Cyprus. From 1630 he is found as parish priest of S. Giorgio in Venice.
There he published numerous works, among which are to be noted a historical chronicle from the beginning of the world up to 1637 (Venice 1637), the edition of the Commentary of Theodore of Cyrene on the Song of Songs (ibid. 1639), and the translation of the Synaxarion of Nicephorus Callistus Xanthopoulos (ibid. 1639).
