MATTEO CIGALAS. – Greek writer, d. ca. 1642. Of Italian origin, b. on the island of Cyprus. From 1630 he is found serving as parish priest of S. Giorgio in Venice.
There he published numerous works, among which should be noted a historical chronicle from the beginning of the world to 1637 (Venice 1637), the edition of Theodoret of Cyrrhus’s Commentary on the Song of Songs (ibid. 1639), and the translation of the Synaxarion of Nicephorus Callistus Xanthopoulos (ibid. 1639).
