Ascetical writer, born at Meerlo, near Horst (diocese of Ruremonde; Netherlands), on 24 July

He called attention to the importance of the social question and maintained by word and in writing that it had to be solved with the aid of religion, which alone, in his view, could bring the worker closer to the employer and the poor to the rich. In 1882 the direction of a commission was entrusted to M., with the task of "studying in the light of Catholic doctrine all questions of social economy and especially those concerning workers, and of determining the true principles by assessing in what regard they were held and in what way they could prevail in the midst of society." He was therefore among those who effectively prepared the way for Rerum Novarum.
