At Guayaquil, where she had moved with her family, confined to bed after a fall from a horse, she resolved to reform the rather worldly life she had led until then, and, having refused the marriage to which she had previously been inclined, she undertook a harsh existence of prayer and penance in a secluded place, in her sister's house; this she left in order to care for poor orphan girls and then to assist the missionaries among the Jibaro Indians. After the missionaries departed, she moved to Riobamba, where she founded her Institute, devoted to the care of poor and abandoned girls, of converts and of those in danger, and she made her vows with her first companions on 14 April 1873, taking the name Mercede di Gesù. The cause of beatification was introduced on 8 February 1946.
