MARIANA OF JESUS DE PAREDES Y FLORES, Saint. - Born in Quito on 31 October 1618, died there on 26 May 1645. She is the first saint of Ecuador. Left an orphan of both parents at only five years of age, she was taken in by her elder sister, donna Jeronima De Caso Miranda, and educated together with three nieces of her own age, with whom she devoted herself to singular exercises of penance and prayer in a spirit of expiation. Not yet ten years old, she united herself to God with the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
She tried in vain to go to the country of the Mainas, pagan indioi whom she wished to convert to the faith, as well as to withdraw with her companions into eremitical life; after her relatives' attempts to place her in a convent had failed, M. chose a special kind of retired life, in three rooms of the house reserved for her, bare and stripped of furniture, where she spent long hours in meditation and contemplation and in practices of austerity, which she interrupted only to go to the church of the Jesuits (by whom she was directed in the spirit), to attend Mass and the practices of worship, or to perform works of charity.
A model of Christian charity, of goodness, of innocence, rich in prophetic charisms, she soon became the spiritual support of the citizenry, who turned to her as to a saint.
