MAUMIGNY, RENÉ de. - Spiritual master, Jesuit, b. January 20, 1837 at Nevers, d. in Paris on January 11, 1917. Having entered the Order in 1855, he taught mathematics for many years in Paris; from 1874 to 1880 he was rector of the philosophical-theological scholasticate of Laval; then he moved to Jersey (England). From 1887 to 1913 he was, at Canterbury, instructor of the third probation.

A distinguished formator of souls, M. knew how to lead to the highest peaks of perfection, through prayer and mortification. A profound scholar of Sacred Scripture and of the mystics, especially the Spanish ones, he shaped souls by means of ordinary and extraordinary prayer, which nevertheless he affirmed was not necessary for true holiness. Many of his principles of direction are set forth in the work Pratique de l'oraison mentale. Oraison ordinaire, Oraison extraordinaire (2 vols., Paris 1905), which was translated into the principal European languages (Italian vers., Turin 1933).
