MAUMIGNY, RENÉ de. — Spiritual master, Jesuit, b. 12 Jan. 1837 at Nevers, d. in Paris on 11 Jan. 1917. He entered the Order in 1855 and taught mathematics in Paris for many years; from 1874 to 1880 he was rector of the philosophical-theological scholasticate at Laval; then he went to Jersey (England). From 1887 to 1913 he served as instructor of the third probation at Canterbury.
An outstanding formator of souls, M. knew how to lead souls to the highest peaks of perfection through prayer and mortification. A profound student of Sacred Scripture and of the mystics, especially Spanish ones, he shaped souls through ordinary prayer and extraordinary prayer, though he maintained that the latter was not necessary for true holiness. Many of his principles of spiritual direction are set forth in the work *Pratique de l'oraison mentale. Oratione ordinarie. Oratione extraordinarie* (2 vols., Paris 1905), which was translated into the principal European languages (II. ed., Turin 1933).
