MAUMIGNY, RENÉ de. - Spiritual master, Jesuit, b. 20 Jan. 1837 at Nevers, d. at Paris on 11 Jan. 1917. Having entered the Order in 1855, he taught mathematics for many years in Paris; from 1874 to 1880 he was rector of the philosophical-theological scholasticate at Laval; he then went to Jersey (England). From 1887 to 1913 he was, at Canterbury, instructor of the third probation.
An eminent former of souls, M. knew how to lead them to the highest heights of perfection through prayer and mortification. A profound student of Holy Scripture and of the mystics, especially the Spanish, he formed souls by means of ordinary and extraordinary prayer, though he maintained that the latter was not necessary for true sanctity. Many of his principles of spiritual direction are set forth in the work Pratique de l'oraison mentale. Oraison ordinaire, Oraison extraordinaire (2 vols., Paris 1905), which was translated into the principal European languages (Italian trans., Turin 1933).
