Musoma, Apostolic Prefecture of
It is situated in the north-western part of the territory of Tanganyika, on the south-eastern shore of Lake Victoria; it is entrusted to the Society for Foreign Missions of Maryknoll, and was erected on 24 June 1950 with territory detached from the Apostolic Vicariate of Musoma-Maswa.
By decree of the same date there was a modification of boundaries with the Apostolic Vicariate of Mwanza. It comprises the districts of M. and Nord Mara, has an area of approx. 10,240 sq. km. and a population of approx. 254,000 inhabitants.
At the time of its erection it had 10,100 Catholics, 3,500 catechumens, approx. 6,000 Protestants and over 230,000 pagans; foreign priests 12, foreign lay brothers 2, foreign sisters 3, major seminarians 1, minor seminarians 20 educated at the Seminary of Mwanza, catechists 83; principal missionary stations 4, secondary ones 85; churches 3, chapels 98. Schools: 4 for boys, 2 for girls; hospitals 1. There is Catholic Action. The Protestants also have in that territory 4 schools.
