Ngozi, Apostolic Vicariate of

NGOZI, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE of. — In the northern part of Urundi (Belgian mandated territory); entrusted to the Society of the Missionaries of Africa; derived from the division of the Apostolic Vicariate of Urundi (14 July 1949), which thus gave rise to N., in the northern part, and Kitega, in the southern part. N. has an area of 10,800 sq. km and a population of 629,000, of whom 196,931 are Catholics, 97,107 catechumens, and 328,540 pagans; it has 12 principal mission stations, 8 indigenous priests, and 34 foreign priests. The schools and various missionary works of assistance flourish there, as do the associations of Catholic Action.
