NZÉRÉKORÉ, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. – In French Guinea, entrusted to the Society of the White Fathers, established on 19 March 1937 with territory detached from the Apostolic Vicariate of Bamako.
In 1913 the White Fathers had settled at Gouéké; but the station was soon abandoned because the missionaries were called up for military service. At the end of 1919 they returned and had to start again from the beginning amid the hostility of the inhabitants. In 1927 a young catechumen was killed by his own parents for refusing to take part in pagan rites. That year saw the first Baptisms of adults.
On 19 July 1951 the territory was reduced to the administrative districts of New Beyla and Macenta following an exchange of territory with the Apostolic Prefecture of Kankan. The missionaries number just over 20. Saverio Paventi
