NZÉRÉKORÉ, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. — In French Guinea, entrusted to the Society of the White Fathers, erected on 19 March 1937 with territory taken from the Apostolic Vicariate of Bamako.
In 1913 the White Fathers had established themselves at Goukéké; but the station was soon abandoned because the missionaries were recalled to the colours. At the end of 1919 they returned and had to start afresh amid the hostility of the inhabitants. In 1927 a young catechumen was killed by his own parents for refusing to take part in pagan rites. That year saw the first adult baptisms.
On 19 July 1951 the territory was reduced to the administrative districts of N’Zérékoré and Macenta following a territorial exchange with the Apostolic Prefecture of Kankan. The missionaries number just over twenty.
