Akrai was a colony of Syracuse from as early as the 7th century B.C.; it was situated 34 km west of Syracuse, where P. is today. Four hypogea have been identified there: the first called the “Senebardo grotto,” the second the “Intagliata quarry,” the third the “Intagliata quarry,” and the fourth the “tomb to the north of the Intagliata,” which features canopy tombs.
