PALAZZOLO ACREIDE

PALAZZOLO ACREIDE. – Akrai was a colony of Siracusa as early as the 7th century B.C.; it was situated 34 km west of Siracusa, where P. is located today.

Four hypogea have been identified there: the first known as the “cave of Senebardo,” the second as that “of the Intagliata quarry,” the third as that “of the Intagliatella quarry,” and the fourth as the “tombs north of the Intagliatella”; they contain canopy tombs; in the hypogeum of the Intagliatella quarry, some

Greek inscriptions of the 5th century, among which one mentions a deacon. It is doubtful whether the fragment now in the Museo Indica is Christian (A. Ferrua, Epigrafia sicula pagana e cristiana, in Riv. arch. crist., 18 [1941], p. 205 ff. and fig. 39).
