PALAZZOLO ACREIDE. – Akrai was a colony of Siracusa as early as the 7th century B.C.; it was situated 34 km west of Siracusa, where P. is located today.

Greek inscriptions of the 5th century, among which one mentions a deacon. It is doubtful whether the fragment now in the Museo Indica is Christian (A. Ferrua, Epigrafia sicula pagana e cristiana, in Riv. arch. crist., 18 [1941], p. 205 ff. and fig. 39).
