Palazzolo Acreide

PALAZZOLO ACREIDE. - Akrai was a colony of Syracuse as early as the 7th century B.C.; it was situated 34 km west of Syracuse, where P. stands today.

Four hypogea have been identified there: the first called "grotto of Senebardo," the second "of the Intagliata quarry," the third "of the Intagliatella quarry," the fourth "tombs north of the Intagliatella"; they feature baldachin tombs; in the hypogeum of the Intagliatella quarry some

Greek inscriptions of the 5th century, among which one mentions a deacon. It is doubtful whether the fragment now in the Museo Indica is Christian (A. Ferrua, Epigrafia sicula pagana e cristiana, in Riv. arch. crist., 18 [1941], p. 205 ff. and fig. 39).
