PANTALEONE, saint, martyr - St. P. Fresco of the 12th century.

PANTALEONE, santo, martire. - He is commemorated in the Martirologio geronimiano on July 28; in the Romano and in the Greek Synaxaria on the preceding day.

Venerated in antiquity and in the Middle Ages, in the East and in the West, he is considered the patron of physicians. The cult is attested by reliable documents, but the Passio is rather legendary: born in Nicomedia and having studied medicine, he is said to have been called to court by the emperor Maximian. Having converted to Christianity and been accused by his colleagues, Maximian is said to have had him subjected to terrible torments from which P. emerged unharmed, until he was beheaded.
