PAULINUS, bishop of TREVIRI, saint. — He is commemorated in the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum* on 31 August.
He succeeded Maximinius in the see of Treviri in 349. He took part in the Council of Arles in 353, from which, for refusing to subscribe to the condemnation of St Athanasius, he was banished by Constantius II to Phrygia, where he died in 358 as a result of the maltreatment inflicted upon him by the Arians. His body was brought back to Treviri in 390, and a church was built in his honour. A steadfast defender of the Nicene faith, he is praised in the writings of St Athanasius, St Hilary and Sulpicius Severus. The biography, written in the 10th century, is in many respects quite fabulous.
