PAOLINO, bishop of TREVIRI, saint. — He is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 31 August.
He succeeded Massimino in the see of Treviri in 349. He took part in the Council of Arles in 353, from which, because he refused to subscribe to the condemnation of s. Atanasio, he was banished by Constanzo II to Phrygia; there he died in 358 as a result of the mistreatment inflicted upon him by the Arians. His body was brought to Treviri in 390, and a church was built in his honor. A tenacious defender of the Nicene faith, he is remembered in laudatory terms by s. Atanasio, s. Ilario, and Sulpicio Severo. The biography, written in the 10th century, is rather fabulous in many passages.
