PAULINUS, Bishop of Trier, Saint. - He is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on August 31.

He succeeded Maximinus in the see of Trier in 349. He took part in the Council of Arles of 353, from which, because he had refused to subscribe to the condemnation of St. Athanasius, he was banished by Constantius II to Phrygia: there he died in 358 as a result of the ill-treatment he had suffered at the hands of the Arians. His body was brought to Trier in 390, and a church was built in his honor. A tenacious champion of the Nicene faith, he is remembered with words of praise by St. Athanasius, St. Hilary and Sulpicius Severus. The biography, written in the 10th century, is in many places rather fanciful.
