MAXIMINUS, Bishop of Trier, Saint. - Born at Silly (Sigillicum) in Aquitaine, of a noble family, toward the end of the 3rd century, he was set to his studies by Bishop St. Agricius, whom he succeeded in the episcopate around 332.
He gave hospitality to St. Athanasius (v.) during the two years of the latter's exile in his city (336-38). In 341 he also received Paul, the exiled patriarch of Constantinople, and afterward worked to bring him back to his see. In 342 he rebuffed four Arian bishops who had come from Antioch to win the Emperor over to their side, and he persuaded him to reject their deceitful proposals. In 343, together with Pope Julius I and Hosius, bishop of Cordoba, he obtained from Constans that a Synod be convoked at Sardica in Illyricum against Arianism, and he subscribed its acts; for this reason the Arian Synod of Philippopolis condemned him, together with Julius I and Hosius.
The year of his death is not known; but by 347 Paulinus had already succeeded him. St. Gregory of Tours calls him « episcopus potens in omni sanctitate » (Historia Francorum, I, 37); he was venerated as patron of Treves.
In the historical Martyrologies his feast is recorded on 29 May; 12 September is the probable date of a translation of relics.
