MAURUS, Saint. - Disciple of St. Benedict; born probably at the beginning of the 6th century to a Roman named Equitius, he followed St. Benedict (v.) at a very young age to Subiaco and Montecassino. St. Gregory the Great (Dialog., I, II, chaps. 3-7) highlights his monastic virtues; nothing else certain is known.
According to the legendary Vita, once attributed to his companion Faustus of Montecassino (BHL, 5772-73), M. would have gone to France in 543, would have founded there the monastery of Glanfeuil in Anjou, and would have died there in 584. His feast is celebrated on January 15 (Martyr. Rom., p. 22). In all likelihood the abbot M. of Glanfeuil has nothing to do with the disciple of St. Benedict.

ST. MAURUS IN FOLKLORE
He is the patron of tinsmiths. His attributes are scales, crutches, and a hoe. His importance in popular tradition is not particularly notable.
Nevertheless, the saint is invoked against various illnesses and diseases, such as coryza and rheumatism. In northern France, at Raimbeacourt (Douai), there was a spring of St. Maurus with an adjoining shrine, on whose walls those suffering from rheumatism and cramps in the legs offered a garter as an ex-voto.
