Apostolic Constitution on the Abbey of Saint Jerome in Rome

Apostolic constitution of Pope Pius XI ·

APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTION ON THE ABBEY OF ST. JEROME IN THE CITY PIUS BISHOP SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MATTER

1 Among the principal glories of the renowned Order of St. Benedict, the learning and doctrine of sacred letters have always held a place of honor; which glory indeed Our Predecessors of happy memory, Pius X and Benedict XV, acknowledged, wishing to entrust to this Order the task of emending the Vulgate edition of the Scriptures through a special Commission established for this work. We also from the beginning have willingly pursued the studies and labors of such a Commission, and have fully observed the care and diligence with which it, having carefully investigated all things beforehand, published the first two volumes in their entirety and prepared two others to be published shortly.

2 ActaApostolicaeSedis-CommentariumOfficiale In order that We may add new impetus to the work thus happily begun and exhibit a particular testimony of Our benevolence to the Order of St.

3 Benedict, We have determined to establish the monastery of St. Jerome in this venerable City, so that a certain community of monks, maintaining religious discipline and devoted to divine praises with the magnificent splendor of sacred rites customary to this Order, may be able to complete the task of publishing the Vulgate anew.

4 Wherefore by Our apostolic authority We establish the monastery of St. Jerome in the City, and We place it in the position of the Commission for emending the Vulgate, and We elevate it to an abbey immediately subject to this Holy See; and at the same time We decree that the aforesaid abbey shall remain subject to the dominion and authority of the Apostolic See in perpetuity, so that it may continue to undertake the emending of the Vulgate and may perform other studies which it shall please Us or Our Successors to entrust to it in the future. But in order that the new abbey, like the Pontifical Commission which it succeeds, may preserve the character of an institute dedicated to the cultivation of learning, We will indeed that it shall always consist of monks already professed; and lest they ever be lacking, We join it as a filial house with the abbey of Sts. Maurice and Maurus at Cloisters, from the Congregation of St. Peter of Solesmes, whose zeal in following the Rule and flourishing condition We have thoroughly observed. We therefore constitute and decree the following:

5 I. The abbey of Cloisters shall from its own community set apart for a time religious men who shall form the community of St. Jerome, whose choir monks, as circumstances permit, may number up to forty; and it shall be the duty of the Abbot of Cloisters, in his zeal for the Church of Christ, to prepare in the future monks who shall be sent to the filial abbey as necessity shall require, and who shall be chosen from among those members most suited to the cultivation of sacred learning. The monks, however, who shall constitute the community of St. Jerome shall remain subject to the abbey of Cloisters as before, and shall have a voice in the election of the Abbot of this monastery. The Abbot of Cloisters, whenever he shall deem it opportune, shall be able to recall them to himself, not without the knowledge of the Apostolic See.

6 II. The monastery of St. Jerome shall be presided over by an Abbot who shall be chosen by the Supreme Pontiff, upon the proposal of the Abbot of Cloisters of a man who shall appear most suitable for directing studies and maintaining discipline. This Abbot of St. Jerome shall possess ordinary jurisdiction over the monks during the time they remain there, and in their governance shall employ assistants designated by himself, namely a Prior, a Subprior and other ordinary administrators, as well as certain counselors whom partly he himself and partly the community shall elect. During the time the Abbot of St. Jerome holds office, he shall cease to be a member of his original Congregation; nevertheless, after his death, he shall enjoy the suffrages and prayers of this Congregation, and he himself shall offer the same for the deceased religious men of this Congregation.

7 III. The Abbot of Cloisters shall be by right the Apostolic Visitor of the monastery of St. Jerome, which he shall visit annually together with another Visitor designated by the Supreme Pontiff. He shall perpetually enjoy the right of inspecting and approving the administration of goods, the part of which pertaining to the necessities of life he himself shall administer, while the part pertaining to the utility of studies the Abbot of St. Jerome shall manage.

8 IV. Finally, the abbey of St. Jerome shall follow the constitutions and monastic usages which the Congregation of St. Peter of Solesmes follows, from which the abbey of Sts. Maurice and Maurus at Cloisters itself derives its origin, saving such changes as immediate subjection to the Holy See requires, and those which have been decreed above, as well as others which shall be defined for the proper purpose of this monastery by a particular Statute to be drawn up shortly.

9 For the execution of all these things We appoint Our beloved son Fidelis von Stotzingen, Abbot Primate of the Order of St. Benedict; to whom therefore We grant the necessary and opportune faculties both for settling all controversies arising in any way in the course of execution, and for subdelegating, for the purpose in question, any man constituted in ecclesiastical dignity or office; and We impose upon him the duty of drawing up in authentic form a record of the execution accomplished, so that it may be religiously preserved in the archive of the new abbey.

10 We further will that copies of these Letters, even if printed, yet subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of some man constituted in ecclesiastical dignity or office, shall be accorded the same faith entirely as would be accorded to these Letters if they themselves were exhibited or shown. Finally, all things which We have established, decreed, ordained and commanded through this Our Constitution, We will to remain ratified and firm by Our authority, We command; notwithstanding anything whatsoever, even those worthy of special mention.

11 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred thirty-three, on the fifteenth day of the month of June, on the Feast of the Most Holy Body of Christ, in the twelfth year of Our Pontificate.

6 II. Monasterio S. Hieronymi praesit Abbas qui a Summo Pontifice eligatur, proponente Abbate Claravallensi virum qui studiis dirigendis tuendaeque disciplinae maxime idoneus videatur. Qui S. Hieronymi Abbas, in monachos tempore quo ibi commorantur, iurisdictione ordinaria polleat inque eorum moderamine adiutores a se ipso designandos adhibeat Priorem, Subpriorem aliosque ordinarios adjooinistros nec non quosdam consiliarios quos, partim ipse, partim conventus eligat. Quoad munere fungetur Abbas S. Hieronymi suae primigeniae Congregationis particeps esse desinet; attamen, post obitum, suffragiis precibusque huius Acia Pii Pp.

7 III. Abbas Claravallensis iure erit Visitator Apostolicus monasterii S. Hieronymi, quod cum alio Visitatore a Summo Pontifice designando quotannis inviset. Idem perpetuo gaudebit iure inspiciendae proband aeque administrationis bonorum, quorum partem, ad necessaria vitae spectantem, ipse per se administrabit, partem vero ad studiorum utilitatem pertinentem Abbas S. Hieronymi curabit.

8 IV.

11 Datum Romae apud Sanctum Petrum, anno Domini millesimo nongentesimo trigesimotertio, die decima quinta mensis Iunii, in Festo SS. Corporis Christi, Pontificatus Nostri anno duodecimo.
