MASSIMINO, bishop of Aix, saint. — The figure
of this Saint is one of the most problematic in
Christian Gaul.
In the catalogue of the ancient bishops of Aix there appears
a Maximus in the sixth century, but he was never counted among the
saints. His memory was linked in the fictitious Acts with
that of St. Marta and St. Maddalena (v.), but in light of recent
studies, this account of an M., the first bishop of Aix,
companion of St. Maria Maddalena and one of the seventy disciples of
the Lord, has proved legendary. In Provence there exists an ancient
church dedicated to St. M., in the town of the same name near Aix, of
which there is evidence at the beginning of the eleventh century;
but nothing can be said about the Saint from whom it takes its name. The
Roman Martyrology records his memory on 8 June.
