MARTA, SANTA

MARTHA, Saint. - Sister of Lazarus (v.) and of Mary of Bethany. The name in Aramaic means "lady." She is mentioned for the first time by Lk. 10:38-42 in a village of Galilee, where she received Jesus, and she "was busy" preparing a worthy welcome for him, while her sister Mary sat quietly listening to the Master. M. protested to Jesus, but Jesus answered her: "M., M., you are busy and troubled about many things; few things are needed, or rather only one. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken from her." With these words Jesus was not condemning the active life, but moderating its excesses, placing the contemplative life before it.

M. was a witness to the resurrection of Lazarus (Jn. 11:20-40) at Bethany. At the gentle lament of M. ("If you had been here, my brother would not have died"),
